Our Amy
Aviatrix
I was at the Boulevard Secondary School at the time Neill & Brown started business in the timber trade with a horse and cart. It would have been too slow for my liking. I preferred the freedom of the skies.
Amy’s star likes
Hull: I always loved my home city. It’s where my family set up the Andrew Johnson Knudtzon (now AJK) fish merchants’ business and I used to come back whenever I could after leaving for London to learn flying.
Music: I have to say ‘Amy, Wonderful Amy’ which celebrated my solo flight to Australia and was the most popular song of its time.
Memory: I’ve crash-landed and run out of fuel all over the world – so what really stands out is my ticker tape parade in Broadway in 1933 after flying across the Atlantic with my husband Jim Mollison. Nearer to home, I officially opened the first Butlins holiday camp at Skegness in 1936.
Food: When you’ve nosedived into the desert near Baghdad, Hull fish and chips comes to mind.
Film: Hell’s Angels in 1930 for some remarkable flying scenes.
